Ideology of Collective Agency
If you make any kind of proposal to provide a broad social safety net today, there will be a loud chorus of anti-leftist rhetoric from all quarters. The collective agency of corporate entities is supported by the Supreme Court, but the collective agency of unions and many other groups designated "subversive" and, in fact, there is a documented history of attack from all branches of government that actually makes it into the record.
The general argument is that the individual rights of ownership cannot be subjected to any external collective will. This argument might be valid if the systems and histories by which the vast majorities of the "property" as defined by a system of laws dominated by the same majority owners is questionabl at best. The libertarian argument is that the members of this class of 1% or .01% owners of world equity are there by some virtue that justifies their priviledged position. The irony of using populist anger over middle class taxes to justify a tax give-away to the wealthy is hard to take.
We propose a different approach to collective agency that is founded on the idea of individual sovereignty, as central priniciple of just government at stake in the creation of the USA in revolution and the government created in that history. The whole of the government of the USA is created for the purpose of expessing individual sovereignty that came from independence of the crown in the collective enterprise of governing a new nation. Those of us who think a key to the future is our ability to work collectively without the kinds of bounds of necessity imposed by a scarcity based financial system can make common cause with most libertarians in a
and maybe find a way to agree on a way to extend libertarian ideas with a much deeper consideration of collective agency. These issues can be seen with many contemporary issues, for example, GMO foods, labelling and such. Whose rights hold sway here, the rights of corporations to control the messaging on their consumer products, or the consumer's right to know about the processes that go into the products? The constitution is silent on corporate forms. Perhaps only the right of assembly is the only reference to collective rights. Therefore, this is within the power of the citizens to fix, but it will require a mastery of sustained political action and to respond directly to the tactics of the opponents of progress.
